SUMMARY:Postponed - Geology: Brimham Rocks\, National Trust
DESCRIPTION:Postponed due to Corona Virus \nArrive Brimham Rocks 10:30. This will allow time for those who have brought coffee to drink it. There are toilets at the visitor centre about 10 mins walk from car park. \n\nNational Trust\, Brimham Rocks\, Summerbridge\, Harrogate\, HG3 4DW\n\nThere is a parking fee of £6 for 4 hours\, £9 all day\, pay and display coins only\, but it is free for NT members. (Don’t forget your membership card to obtain parking ticket.) \nI suggest we share lifts from Colvend as a number of us are NT members. We will leave Colvend at 9:55am \n  \nThe guided tour will depart the car park at 11.00 sharp. \nThe cost of our volunteer guide\, Stephen Lewis\, who as an amateur geologist is very well informed about the geology of the area\, is £25 (a donation to the NT). We will divide the cost according to the numbers attending. \n  \nThe tour will take about an hour. \nAfter the tour we will be able to watch a video in the room upstairs over the shop\, which will also be available for us to eat our lunch. Please bring a packed lunch as usual. \nAfter the lunch we are able to spend the afternoon walking on site at leisure. \nThere is a Refreshment Kiosk open 11:00-4:00.

This area is the largest expanse of limestone pavement outside the well-known Ingleborough karst of Yorkshire\, and the National Nature Reserve at Great Asby Scar includes the best developed and least damaged landforms of the whole area\,  …” \n‘The limestone pavements of Great Asby Scar\, Cumbria\, UK’\, by H.S. Goldie. Environmental Geology 28\, Oct 1996. \nStart/Meeting point: OS Sheet 91\, Appleby-in-Westmorland @ NY 632107. 800m north of the cattle grid and the junction with the lane to Crosby Ravensworth. There is off-road parking in a small ‘quarry’. \nAlso OL19\, 1:25000 Howgill Fells and Upper Eden Valley \nThe start is approximately 3km north of Orton on the B6260 (and about 6km north of the Tebay junction on the M6). \nStart time: 10:30am. Walk description: moderate\, approx 7 km over rough\, stony ground. \nToilets and cafe in Orton\, nothing available on the walk. Hence bring a packed lunch. \nStrong footwear suitable for walking on limestone pavements which can be very slippery when wet. \nClothing suitable for possible inclement weather; the site is quite an exposed spot. \nThis walk is based on “Exploring Lakeland Rocks and Landscapes\, The Cumberland Geological Society\, Walk No. 7 by Simon Webb \nNo hammering at this site.
