DESCRIPTION:Lichens are a much unrecorded section of our wildlife. Yet they cover 6-8 percent of the world’s land surface. Recently more people have become aware of the symbiotic relationship of the fungus and alga (or blue-green bacterium) which make up the lichen.  A lichen looks like a single organism\, but it is actually a symbiotic relationship between different organisms.

DESCRIPTION:Meet at the YDNP car park in Grassington at 9.45am for 10am departure. \n  \nThe walk: We will leave the YDNP car park via the well walked path leading down to Linton Falls. After crossing the river Wharfe we head for Linton Church and thereafter make our way uphill until we reach the road. After crossing the road we take the next footpath to our right. Our walk continues uphill until we reach Thorpe Lane where we turn left and head for the hamlet of Thorpe. A coffee break will be taken at this point. Shortly after heading down the road in the direction of Burnsall we take the footpath to our right which will lead us directly to the village. After a break for lunch we make our way back to Grassington via the Dales Way. \nPlease contact walks@uwfs.org.uk if you would like to go.

SUMMARY:Talk: Hebe - A National Plant Collection in the Yorkshire Dales
DESCRIPTION:A little bit about Nigel Hutchinson; I started Horticulture in 1979 at Wakefield Parks Department and studied Horticulture at Askham Bryan College. I have worked at Oxford Botanic Garden and on my return to Yorkshire I started Hedgerow Nursery in Keighley\, moved to the Yorkshire Dales and had a Landscaping and garden maintenance business. I lectured at RHS Harlow Carr\, Skipton and Shipley college on Horticulture and did some broadcasting at Radio Leeds. I now run the plant centre which is attached to our family business at The Hedgerow in Threshfield.

SUMMARY:Talk: Caving in the Yorkshire Dales
DESCRIPTION:This talk is a light-hearted look at caving and digging in the Yorkshire Dales. Much of the limestone in the Dales is honeycombed with cave passages.  Each year the number of passages is extended through the efforts of cavers digging and discovering new passages. In the western part of the Dales around Leck and Casterton Fell many of these cave systems have been extended and linked together to form what is known as the 3 Counties System; a series of caves that link passages starting in Cumbria\, going under parts of Lancashire\, and emerging in Yorkshire. This talk focuses on a small digging project that that was carried out in Notts Pot 2\, in 2014.  A talk for those new to caving.
