SUMMARY:Talk by Jim Crossley: Development of Grimwith Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Grimwith Reservoir is situated on the River Dibb\, a tributary of the River Wharfe\, some four miles east of Grassington. The illustrated account describes its development from the construction of the first reservoir on the site in the mid-1800s\, to provide compensation for water abstractions taken for supply from other areas of the River Wharfe catchment\, to its subsequent extensive enlargement commissioned in 1983\, to support new and existing public water supply abstractions from the River Wharfe downstream.\nThe presentation includes a detailed description of the planning and design of the enlarged reservoir supply scheme\, as well as addressing with photographs\, the problems encountered and progress made on the construction of the enlarged earth dam. The associated river abstraction and water transmission works are also briefly referred to.

SUMMARY:The Harland Lecture. Dr Ian Adams: Municipal Grandeur - Civic Architecture in Northern England
DESCRIPTION:Abstract.  This talk looks at the evolution of civic architecture and in particular how these buildings came to symbolise the wealth and importance of towns and the civic pride of their citizens. Originally basic\, functional buildings\, they began\, in the 18th Century\, to be more imposing structures. This led to the great masterpieces of grand architecture that are our Victorian and Edwardian town halls. Architecturally\, Georgian mansions gave way to Greek and then Roman temples\, to Italian Renaissance palazzos\, mediaeval Gothic halls\, Northern Renaissance concoctions and Edwardian Baroque palaces. \nSince the end of World War II we seem to have returned to mundane utility with some rather dull civic centres. The decline of local government in recent decades has left some of the great structures of the past at risk of redundancy and destruction\, and in need of care and attention.

SUMMARY:Talk by Stephanie Bradbeer: Impacts of invasive species in the UK and how to prevent their spread in the environment
DESCRIPTION:The introduction and spread of invasive alien species (IAS) is of major concern for a range of stakeholders\, with annual costs in the UK estimated to be £1.8 billion. IAS impacts range from ecosystem function alteration\, predation of native species\, direct human health concerns and increased flood risk. Whilst controlling established population is essential\, preventing IAS spread is considered the most cost-effective management method. IAS can be spread on a range of vectors including vehicles\, boats and recreational equipment. Methods employed to prevent the spread of IAS by removing them from vectors are collectively termed\, biosecurity. Determining methods that are both effective in removal and cost- and time- efficient are essential to inform biosecurity guidelines. Furthermore\, understanding stakeholders’ level of awareness of biosecurity\, and the impact of training is key to achieving altered behaviours to prevent IAS spread and validating training techniques. Collectively this work develops our understanding of preventing IAS\, thus limiting their impact on the environment.

SUMMARY:Talk by Laurel Phillipson: Remote in the Yorkshire Dales\, Airton Meeting House and its radical precursors.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: To a casual observer\, the building which may be the oldest Dissenters’ meeting place in Britain and is now the Quaker Meeting House in Airton may appear to be an unremarkable example of early seventeenth-century vernacular architecture. On closer examination\, it is found to embody several enigmatic features whose investigation leads into a consideration of aspects of social and religious history distinctive to south Craven and especially to our immediate locality. Tonight’s talk will look at a small area of the countryside over a long timespan.

SUMMARY:Talk by Jane Houlton: Richard Fountaine - The Almshouse and the Man
DESCRIPTION:The Fountaine Hospital Almshouse in Linton is a unique miniature gem of English Baroque architecture.  Research into its architectural history by the late conservation architect Michael Devenish and writer Jane Houlton has revealed much fascinating evidence about the building\, and its benefactor\, Richard Fountaine\, 1639-1722\, merchant of the City of London\, born in Linton. \nJane Houlton will talk about their main findings\, with analysis of the building\, and facts about the life and career of Richard Fountaine.  The research proved exceptionally hard\, with few primary documents extant; Jane will also describe the challenges of the work.  Jane has published a book  “An Almshouse for Linton – Richard Fountaine’s Legacy” which summarises the research\, The full research report “The Fountaine Hospital Almshouse – An Architectural History” is available in Skipton Reference Library\, at the British Library\, and at the RIBA Library.

SUMMARY:Talk by Dr James Enever: “SKANSEN” and Sweden’s vernacular buildings
DESCRIPTION:Abstract.  Skansen is on a 75acre site in central Stockholm. It shows life through the ages from all over Sweden. It is open throughout the year. There are over 150 buildings from the 16th century to the 20th century. The buildings are all in their original condition and have been moved to Skansen from all over the country. The buildings range from: a manor house to a single room forest home; farms and Sami encampments; church and mission house; craft workshops such as glass\, wood\, silversmith and trade shops such as bakers\, Coop food shop\, Bank and hardware shop. Most of the buildings are open as living buildings on a rotational basis with volunteers. These volunteers maybe: preparing food; weaving and dying; looking after pigs\, cows and sheep; cutting\, threshing and grinding corn; playing music in the church; selling bread and cakes in the bakers. The buildings’ volunteers are fluent in Swedish and English and are ready to answer questions.

SUMMARY:Talk by Dr Kenneth Jackson: Skipton Woods - Ancient Woodland or Post Industrial Landscape?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract.  The valley of Eller Beck in Skipton Woods was the focus for the industrialization of the town during the late eighteenth century. The talk examines the uses of water power\, the extraction and transport of limestone\, the way in which these activities shaped the woodland landscape\, and their legacy for the modern tourist economy.

SUMMARY:Talk by Dr Don Henson: Star Carr\, changing views of Early Mesolithic Britain
DESCRIPTION:Abstract – The first settlers of Britain after the end of the Ice Age found their way to Yorkshire 11\,000 years ago. Don Henson will talk about what the University of York’s fieldwork at the internationally important site of Star Carr in the Vale of Pickering has revealed about the way of life these hunter-gatherers. Not only the earliest houses to be found in Britain but other rare finds show them to have been more sophisticated that many have assumed.

SUMMARY:Talk by Dr Vic Edy: There May Be Snow – a summer walk on the Hardangervidda.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Hardangervidda in south central Norway is Europe’s largest high mountain plateau\, with an average elevation of 1100 metres. Its highest point\, over 1800 metres above sea-level\, is a permanent ice cap.  The plateau has many rivers and lakes\, and some interesting glacial features\, and makes for superb walking in Summer\, and skiing in Winter. In the early 1960’s\, I had been there with the Scouts and Guides\, walking and camping. In 2000\, with my wife\, I went again to the area. We walked from Finse (close to the northern edge of the area) southwards\, for 8 days\, to Haukeliseter on the road between Oslo and Bergen. In these eight days we crossed one other road! The area is covered in a network of mountain huts\, so\, rather than carrying a tent\, sleeping bags and cooking equipment\, we stopped in huts (some rather luxurious\, others perhaps less so.)

SUMMARY:A Walk in the Extended National Park
DESCRIPTION:As I walked in to Stockport Town Hall as a typical disengaged fifteen year old\, I didn’t realise that the next 15mins would have such a profound effect on the rest of my life. I was there to attend a scheduled career interview and the only good point was\, that I\, along with many others had been given the morning off school to attend. It was a typical grey Manchester day and although the Town Hall is the epitome of Edwardian elegance with a magnificent Italian entrance and a must see Wurlitzer organ. I had the distinct impression they would not be able to help me. I was directed to a basement office with no natural light\, the walls and floors were packed with boxes and the office had the distinct smell of an old musty library.  From behind a desk and a mountain of paperwork a warm friendly voice asked “ What do you want to do when you leave school”.  “I want to be a Ranger” I replied and for good measure\, I added\, “in  Africa.”
