DESCRIPTION:Although the veins of lead in Hebden Gill had been known about for a long time they were not extensively mined until 1850’s when the Hebden Moor Mining Company began working in the area. Despite considerable investment of time and money the veins were only productive for about a decade.  Today there are still many signs of the lead workings visible.

Recently more people have become aware of the symbiotic relationship of the fungus and alga (or blue-green bacterium) which make up the lichen.  A lichen looks like a single organism\, but it is actually a symbiotic relationship between different organisms.
