We learnt about the nature recovery plans, and walked among some of the 350,000 native trees recently planted. There was a wealth of information about the developing floral and fauna habitats, which run alongside profitable quality food production. The way close-cropped sheep pasture had changed in less than a handful of years was most striking, together with the success of new tree planting.

Many thanks to Wendy Berrington for organising the trip. Our thanks to Kelly and Alastair for giving their time to show us around.

My thanks go Phil Richards, Area Ranger for Wharfedale at the Yorkshire Dales National Park who kept me advised of the progress of all the repairs.

At 10am on Saturday 20th April, having received apologies from four UWFS members for not being available to complete the walk three of us set off from the YDNP carpark and headed for Linton Falls which was in full flow. Having crossed the bridge over the river Wharfe we progressed in the direction of Linton Church and thereafter followed the lower footpath towards the river before ascending to the Threshfield to Burnsall road. After crossing the road the footpath towards Thorpe was clearly visible and we progressed through very green fields, several being full of sheep and very young lambs. On entering Thorpe Lane we headed directly to the hamlet where we enjoyed our coffee/tea break in the picnic area in the centre. Thereafter walking a short distance along the road before joining the footpath to Burnsall. Again many young lambs were visible along with their Mums as we crossed the fields. At Burnsall a 12K Trail Race was in progress and the riverside car park was being well utilised. We lunched by the river before heading back along the Dales Way to Grassington.

Many wild flowers were seen along the footpaths and roadsides.

Bird sightings included: Goosander, Oystercatchers, Pied Wagtail, Chaffinch,
Lapwing, Coot, Robin, Blackbird, Jackdaw, Mallards, White Geese and several
more..

Today the concern was mud! Nine of us found the path along the Leeds Liverpool canal not too bad but care was needed.

Those arriving from Grassington had probably used the road that was improved by the Duke of Devonshire once the canal was built to transport his lead to market from Grassington.

Gargrave is the most northerly point of the Leeds Liverpool canal and just beyond our destination of East Marton is its highest point. We also became aware that the canal makes the Aire Gap through the Pennines unique in that it has four means of transport, road, rail, river, and canal. All are very close together just beyond Gargrave.

We actually pass 10 locks on our outward journey raising the canal around 201 feet, 61 metres. However between Newton Bridge and Green Bank there are no locks, instead the canal follows the contour making several loops and one notices the Mast “moving around”! The canal is wide enough to take the double width Wide Beam boats as well as Narrowboats and here features one or two larger pools to enable the canal boats to turn round. The towpath on which we walk was initially for the horses to travel while hauling the boats and their cargo.

and past the now closed Cross Keys pub, but open at weekends Abbots Harbour Cafe then we head for the Pennine Way. The first part was avoided as totally poached to very muddy by the horses. The lane was much easier! At Trent Laithe we chose the fields! Well what a mud fest that turned out to be, often at risk of footwear being sucked off and definitely featuring two steps forward one back. We passed the finger post at Scaleber with excellent views of the surrounding fells, soon back on a lane. However we weakened after crossing the railway line by staying on the lane instead of keeping to the Way before heading for Gargrave Church and the car park. Tea and cake was our reward for an excellent walk – through mud – offered by the leader.

We were rewarded by sight of a pair of Cormorants opposite Linton Church.

We went out via Low Mill and pondered the future of the Trout Farm which has a new fence and is being redeveloped. Just before the gate into the field we noticed a number of geese around the pond which now seems to be a year long feature. Turning left here, we followed the track to the start of the hill and cut off to a little used shortcut past the farm. This joins into the path which runs parallel to the road and comes out by the church in Hebden.

We then headed down Hebden Beck, passing two more Trout Farms. These farms use water that originates on Grassington Moor in and around the lead mines, which caused another discussion.

This lasted until Jack bought a motorbike and could ride, via Yarnbury, to park above the Town Hall. A young Police officer complained about this to his colleague, who suggested that if the Officer would like to go and tell the parents he was welcome to, pointing out of the window. At that time the Police Station was the white house behind modern day Hedgerow and Barras can be see on the ridge line of the hill from there.

potholing tragedy which took place in Mossdale caverns in 1967, where 6 cavers were drowned. We linked it to the “capping” of the mines in the late 60’s, coinciding with the ending of the Railway in Threshfield and then today’s on-going work to make the mines safe. From here we followed the track downhill to pass Capplestone Gate and what’s left of a Monastic building.

We joined the Daleway at the top of Coniston Dib where we stopped for lunch before returning to Grassington via the Dalesway. We paused to look at a restored lime kiln before returning across Lea Green where we encountered our first rain, much later than had been forecast. On the way we looked at an Iron Age wall and compared the lime kiln to the one seen earlier in the week at Coldstones Cut on the Local History Group outing to Wath.

It was dry and mild as our group of five commenced the walk from Pendle Heritage Centre at 10am. We followed various footpaths, towpaths, tracks and for short distances local roads during the walk.

Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford is an old Manor house with Walled Garden and is set in a Park next to Pendle Water.

We were able to admire the views of the hilltop town of Colne and Boulsworth Hill as a backdrop from the white lock keeper’s cottage as we joined the towpath alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The Foulridge Tunnel which took five years to build was completed in 1796 and was of interest to us all. There is no towpath through the tunnel so boats were “legged” through by men lying on top of the craft using their legs on the roof of the tunnel.

A deep ford lay ahead which thankfully could be avoided by a safe footbridge!! Safely across, we were then entertained as we watched two commercial vans go through the water which was approximately a foot deep. Fortunately, neither got stuck!!

We then ascended the hill, via a small holding, to Colne Edge and after passing through Alkincoats Woodland, a local Nature Reserve, we soon arrived at Alkincoats Park where we stopped for our coffee/tea break.

We were soon away from the traffic and heading back towards Barrowford via the Leeds Liverpool Canal Towpath. It was time for lunch which was had under one of the canal bridges as it provided shelter from the rain, and we were able to watch the volume of water entering the canal from an inlet increase dramatically. With more energy, it was time to continue the walk and as we left, we turned to watch the substantial increase in the amount of water flowing over the lock gates a few feet up stream.

Ann has sent through some of her pictures for us.

We met in Reeth market square and walked towards the river to cross the suspension bridge over the Swale. Unfortunately the direct path to the bridge was closed and so we had to follow a diversion further west. This was well signed but added a mile to our walk. Having crossed the river we walked along the south side to Grinton Church. We met guests arriving for a wedding and for the next two miles to Marrick Priory, we walked to the sound of church bells. Marrick Priory, which dates from the 12th century, was once a house for Benedictine nuns; it is now used as an outdoor centre for school children. We stopped for coffee outside the abbey before ascending the steep woodland path known as “the nuns’steps” to the small village of Marrick. This once supported two chapels but both are now converted to private houses. From Marrick we followed Fremington Edge with fine views of Grinton and Reeth in the valley below before descending steeply to the river below and back to Reeth, pausing on route to talk to the donkeys which are usually to be found in a field at the edge of the village

The children used to come down Kimper Gill and Intake lane to go to school every day. The school in those days was next to Dales Toffee shop and the Head Master Mr Frankland lived in a house where our President has formerly lived. As the children got older, one got a motorbike and there is a story whereby a young policeman told his Sergeant that he was going to prosecute the lad for riding a motorbike underage on the road. In those days the Police Station was next to the Hedgerow shop in Threshfield, so the Sergeant pointed out of the window and said “See that house on the skyline over there? If you want to go and tell the lad he can’t ride his bike to school then be my guest”. Obviously the younger policeman thought better of it.

The rusted wire is part of the wire ropes introduced onto Grassington Moor in the 1840’s. They were cutting edge at the time and discussed extensively in the books. However the three pieces we found were not near mines being mechanised in that period which poses a question of how they got there.

The stone structure is the bowl of a smelt mill and its doorway away from the often visited Cupola smelt mills lower down the moor. The bottom of the bowl was filled with brushwood and the ore placed on top. The brushwood was set alight and the resultant lead collected. Again this process is discribed in detail in the books.
