AM – Winskill with Tom Lord: http://www.lowerwinskill.co.uk/visit.htm

PM – Stackhouse

Lower Winskill is a working farm set in spectacular scenery overlooking Ribblesdale. Tom Lord farms it using traditional methods to encourage wildlife and protect the historic landscape. He will show us round the buildings, tell us some of the history and take us to see some of the farmland and stone walls.

Please bring a packed lunch and we will be able to eat in one of the buildings. There will be hot water, tea, coffee and milk so there is no need to bring drinks for lunch. There will be a very small charge for this which will also cover the costs of a small gift for Tom. There are toilets available in one of the farm buildings.

After lunch we will have to condense cars in Giggleswick, as parking is very difficult, so no more than three vehicles when we visit the hamlet of Stackhouse on the other side of the river Ribble. From there those who would like to, can proceed to The Knights Table at Little Stainforth for maybe coffee and a sticky bun!

It would be an advantage to keep the numbers to less than 12, so please let the organiser know if you would like to come. Members should have received an email on 17 May.

Guided tour of the Piece Hall. Minibus from Grassington

FIELD SOCIETY HISTORY AND VERNACULAR BUILDINGS GROUP VISIT TO THE PIECE HALL AND INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM, Blackledge, Halifax HX1 1RE

Standing proudly at the centre of this historic town, The Piece Hall is a must-see on any visitor’s list. It was originally built in 1779 by the wool merchants of the town as a place to trade cloth, and is now the only surviving building of its kind anywhere in the UK.

It is home to a Heritage centre, Industrial Museum, art gallery, shops, cafés, restaurants and bars surrounding the huge open square.

As an historic building The Piece Hall does not have its own car park.

However, within 4 minutes walking distance of The Piece Hall is the Eureka C.P.

postcode HX1 2NE.

This is next to the Halifax Minster which houses the family vault of the Lister family of Shibden Hall and is the burial place of Anne Lister.

Plan for the day. We will use the Grassington Community mini bus to get to Halifax, leaving Grassington at 10 am. The bus can pick up in Threshfield, Cracoe and Skipton if needs be. We should arrive in Halifax at approximately 11.30 a.m..

The cost for minibus will be £70, so hopefully the 17 seats which includes the driver, can be divided between us all.

We will do a self-guided tour of The Piece Hall, including the Heritage Centre.

There will be time to explore and have lunch – there are a great variety of eateries to choose from.

At 2 p.m. we are booked into the Calderdale Industrial Museum for a guided tour of four fascinating floors of industrial and social history. This tour lasts 2 hours – the cost is £5.00 per head for our group members. The Museum is run by volunteers and usually opens only on Saturdays. They are however opening specially for us on the Thursday afternoon. I therefore need to know numbers in the next few weeks please.

We need to be certain that there will be enough people –

a) to share in the cost of the mini bus and

b) the Museum. Please let me know if you will be coming so I can go ahead and confirm that we will be going to Halifax.

Please let the organiser know if you would like to come.

A walk around the vernacular builds of Hawes, followed by a talk on the latter day explorations of Dales Lead Mines.

The talk will be at The Dales Countryside Museum, Station Yard, Hawes, DL8 3NT. Dave Carlisle will talk about “Woolies, Wetsuits and Waterwheel – over 50 yrs of the Earby Mining Research Group”.

The talk is at 2:00pm and Group rates apply: £3.80 or £3.30 for concessions which includes entry to the museum (normally £4.80 alone) which certainly will be of interest, as the museum has a lot of objects that were discovered and rescued by this group, including the Providence Mine waterwheel from Kettlewell.

In the morning, members may like to look around Hawes. Maybe to visit the Cheese Making Creamery, Ropemakers, Dales Countryside Museum or have a look at the shops before getting some lunch. Of interest to some will be a Quakers burial ground which is situated on the main road virtually next to the Museum Station Car Park in the direction of the town centre.

A minibus will leave Grassington Colvend Car Park at 09:30am and cost £10 for members. Pick-ups can be arranged up Wharfedale if required.

For those travelling by car, the car park charges at the museum is £4.50 for all day or £2.50 for two hours. There is other limited parking in the town and at the Creamery.

We will meet outside the Museum at 01:45pm for the Talk.

Members should let the organiser know if they would like to go.
