Vernacular Buildings: Halifax Piece Hall
October 24, 2019 @ 10:00 - 17:00
Guided tour of the Piece Hall. Minibus from Grassington
FIELD SOCIETY HISTORY AND VERNACULAR BUILDINGS GROUP VISIT TO THE PIECE HALL AND INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM, Blackledge, Halifax HX1 1RE
Standing proudly at the centre of this historic town, The Piece Hall is a must-see on any visitor’s list. It was originally built in 1779 by the wool merchants of the town as a place to trade cloth, and is now the only surviving building of its kind anywhere in the UK.
It is home to a Heritage centre, Industrial Museum, art gallery, shops, cafés, restaurants and bars surrounding the huge open square.
As an historic building The Piece Hall does not have its own car park.
However, within 4 minutes walking distance of The Piece Hall is the Eureka C.P.
postcode HX1 2NE.
This is next to the Halifax Minster which houses the family vault of the Lister family of Shibden Hall and is the burial place of Anne Lister.
Plan for the day. We will use the Grassington Community mini bus to get to Halifax, leaving Grassington at 10 am. The bus can pick up in Threshfield, Cracoe and Skipton if needs be. We should arrive in Halifax at approximately 11.30 a.m..
The cost for minibus will be £70, so hopefully the 17 seats which includes the driver, can be divided between us all.
We will do a self-guided tour of The Piece Hall, including the Heritage Centre.
There will be time to explore and have lunch – there are a great variety of eateries to choose from.
At 2 p.m. we are booked into the Calderdale Industrial Museum for a guided tour of four fascinating floors of industrial and social history. This tour lasts 2 hours – the cost is £5.00 per head for our group members. The Museum is run by volunteers and usually opens only on Saturdays. They are however opening specially for us on the Thursday afternoon. I therefore need to know numbers in the next few weeks please.
We need to be certain that there will be enough people –
- a) to share in the cost of the mini bus and
- b) the Museum. Please let me know if you will be coming so I can go ahead and confirm that we will be going to Halifax.
Please let the organiser know if you would like to come.
