Upcoming Walking Group Outing 21 Oct: Cancelled

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the proposed Walk this weekend.

Upcoming Geology Group Outing 25 Oct: Malham Cove and Pikedaw

The following are the details for the proposed Field Day around Malham. This is a full day out in an exposed part of the Yorkshire Dales, so is weather dependant. A reasonable level of fitness and appropriate clothing/equipment are required.

The plan is to meet at the Malham Yorkshire Dales Car Park at 9:45am. Parking in the YDNP is chargeable and a day ticket should be purchased. Appropriate clothing, with food and fluid appropriate for a day in the field, over rough ground, should be brought. Boots and walking poles are recommended.

The group will walk behind the car park heading for Burns Barn and Field Barns to climb Pikedaw via Butterlands Barn, along the Mid Craven Fault.  Map readers amongst you may note the steepness of the climb which we can assure you we will do slowly! There is Geology and history to see on the ground and probably a coffee break. We will see mine shaft and washing floors with some interesting minerals – though very small.

That is most of the climbing done, many splendid views, and we will head for Watlowes and Malham Cove, here we walk over the pavement or behind it according to preference of the group before descending the steps. The distance is a bit short of 6 miles with steep climb and descent and some stiles.

It is stressed that this is NOT a wet day walk and will be cancelled if the weather is not appropriate, in which case we could meet indoors in Gargrave to discuss the walk’s Geology if wished.

Please let us know if you hope/wish to do the walk so we can let you know if it is cancelled, so please check emails and phone the night before and around 8am on the day. You should email your mobile number to geology@uwfs.org.uk

Let us know if we have missed any information you require and we look forward to seeing some of you.
